Lesley Fightmaster taught me the best way ever to learn ujjayi breath: breath from your mouth like you will fog up a mirror, and then close your mouth. This is ujjayi. For the first time in like two and a half years I totally get why ujjayi is AWESOME and truly the foundation of the practice. It's actually not difficult at all, once you get it, and it turns everything meditative, makes everything flow, even makes breathing easier in general.
People often described it to me as a "constriction in the back of your throat" or "like you're fogging up a mirror, but through your nose" or told me "don't worry you can't do it now, you'll get it later" but NO ONE ever told me how easy it is... Like, literally, just fog up a mirror but with your mouth closed--you're not fogging up the mirror with your nose, for heaven's sake, that's not it at all-- and NO ONE really helped me understand what a cool, transformative practice it is.
